China hits back at US on rights
The US said China had not undertaken democratic reform
China has accused the US of double standards over human rights in response to an official US report which labelled Beijing an authoritarian regime.
Beijing calls Washington's rights record "tattered and shocking".
The Chinese report cites rising violent crime in the US as posing a serious threat to the lives, liberty and personal security of its people.
The foreign ministry said the US should stop posing as a rights watchdog and concentrate on its own problems.
"Stop exercising double standards on human rights issues and wrongly meddling in the internal affairs of other countries," said ministry spokesman Qin Gang.
He added that China's achievements on human rights had been "widely recognised by the international community".
The Chinese report accuses the US of arrogance and is particuarly scathing about the Iraq conflict.
"The invasion of Iraq by US troops has produced the biggest human rights tragedy and the greatest humanitarian disaster in modern world," the document said.
Beijing's report, gathered from US and international news sources, quotes crime statistics and cites particular incidents such as the Virginia Tech massacre to back up its claims.
The report comes in response to the US State Department's annual survey of human rights across the world.
Although the report accuses China of denying its people basic freedoms, the country is not listed as one of the world's most systematic rights violators.

i would much rather have seen this headline on almost every newspaper in NYC today instead of pics of Spitzer's hooker.

Best of both worlds.

For political gain, of course. That's why any country does anything, really.
They'd say something similar if, say, Canada denounced their human rights record.
"Stop... wrongly meddling in the internal affairs of other countries" is their blanket defense against criticism.

When the US government tortures detainees, it loses all moral high ground and criticism on China now seem like a huge hypocrisy to the world.

listen, at least china is out in the open with their shit. i have more respect for a government that is up front with what it does than a government that uses insidious methods of control and then pretends to be free.

Don't kid yourself... China is not actually open at all with what it does. The information is leaked out by people leaving the country, at great personal risk.
I think what you mean is that China doesn't deny what it does. It just says these people (Falun Gong "terrorists", Free Tibet "disruptive citizens") deserve it.
Unlike the US government, that denies these things (torture, etc) even happen, and puts up the "freedom" front.

The thing is, it's just a repressive regime engaging in propaganda. Quite a normal tactic actually. The unfortunate thing is that this time they're really not too far off base.

Yep, both sides had the 'same' point! Same as the "kettle... calling the pot - black."
What if, instead of PRC-China, it's Vanuatu doing the talking against USA huh?

If you're gonna bash China about their record, don't think they're gonna sit there and take it like other countries. China is one country Washington can't intimidate or bully around. They have been here for four thousand years and they're keeping the U.S. economy afloat so if the U.S. was smart, they wouldn't incite issues they themselves are perpetrators of.

Oh come on folks - the very fact that China chooses to mention "increasing violence" (?), "Virgina tech", etc. as examples of the American double standards on human rights issues (i.e., facts and events that have to do nothing whatsoever with human rights), instead of, say, wiretapping, secret detention and trials, torture, ex.rendition, Guantanamo, tells us more about China than the U.S.
The latter are obviously too close to China s own atrocious record in this department. (Iraq is none the less a valid item on China s list, of course.)
I didn t need China, of all countries, to tell me what I can very well see for myself, in terms of what parody of its former self the U.S. have become.
Non-news on several levels. This game is old. I remember official Soviet publications from the eighties very earnestly discussing the horrible human rights record of the United States (how they treat their negroes, and their women, and of course their working class, etc.). Finger-pointing, smoke screens. Even where it was true.
